The Smailes Goldie Hull Pirates produced a dominant performance last night against the Sheffield Steeldogs. Hewitt's men scored an eye watering 13 goals past the Sheffield outfit in, what was, a must win game for both sides. It was a clinical display of hockey worthy of true title contenders which produced a 13-2 scoreline few could have predicted.

The Pirates got off to a flying start going 3-0 up within the first few minutes, however the Steeldogs were quick to regroup and brought the score back to 3-2. All of this was within the first 5 minutes and the game looked to be set to be another classic Yorkshire derby! The Pirates went into the break with a 4-2 lead and all left to play for. However, when Hewitt added a 5th in the 23rd minute everything changed. There followed a monumental collapse with 7 unanswered goals scored within a 10 minute period. In amongst this Zimozdra was replaced by Stones in goal, he was then replaced by Zimozdra after leaking 4 goals in 3minutes.

So, what happened?

Well, if you look at the stats we outshot them 56-24 scoring 1 goal for every 4 shots (give or take). At the other end of the ice Ash Smith maintained a 91.6% average with the team working hard to prevent shooting chances.

If you look at the dynamics of the game we were hungry and ready for the game. A combination of clinical finishes, aggressive forecheck, do-or-die backcheck and solid goaltending was where our success was born. Our ability to walk away from conflict and provocation also helped by keeping us at even strength for the vast majority of the game. It was a true team performance where everyone did their job and did it with 100% commitment. The Steeldogs could not cope with our fast, direct style of play or our team synergy. Each and every player was a credit to the Pirates organisation and showed the grit and determination loved by sports fans in our city.

But it is in our stands where our perfect storm takes shape. You are, without doubt, the best fan base in this league! Your weight of expectation and standard you set is high, and rightly so! But, that pushes this team to achieve, to see you in all your glory, in full voice is a thing of beauty and it lifts your team. You create an atmosphere and environment that is as welcoming as it is intimidating depending which bench you are stood on. We salute each and every one of you for your support, week in, week out, without you there is no team.

We spoke with Head Coach Jason Hewitt earlier and asked him to sum up the evening:

"What a night of hockey that was, I don’t think anyone was expecting that, but by the look and sound of it everybody enjoyed it!

I think this last 4 games we’ve really clicked and identified how we have to play to be successful, the boys are really buying in and playing for one another, it’s great to see and be a part of.

I feel like now we’ve set the bar for our play and it’s come at a great time for us. All 3 lines look balanced and dangerous, we’re taking nothing for granted though. We have a very tough weekend coming up but we’re confident and feeling good going into to it.

Finally, you, the fans, again played your part! Thursday nights are tough sometimes at any level, but you showed up as always and the atmosphere was incredible! Thank you & let's do it again on Sunday

There isn't a great deal else to say except; we hope to see you all again on Sunday for the return leg of a tough double header against the Solway Sharks!

Tickets are available now, let's fill our building and get behind this amazing team!!
