Unveiling of our 75th D-Day anniversary commemorative Shirt

2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings,  often referred to as D-Day.

This was the largest seaborn invasion in history, where the allied forces began the operation to liberate France from nazi occupation,

The initial assault of the landings on the 6th June 1944 was from a combination of American, British and Canadian forces.

Ice hockey in the Uk is played at the highest levels predominantly with Canadian and America players. The Hull Pirates also have Canadians and Americans within our hockey family. With some past and some presently playing and working for the team, we thought it to be fitting to honour the brave men of the respective forces within the shirt.

The shirt depicts all three countries forces storming the beaches on that historic day; the front is the Americans, the right sleeve the British, and the left sleeve the Canadians.

The image on the back is a homage to all the armed forces that participated in the D-Day landings; Naval, Airforce and Army.

Aircraft of the allied forces were marked with what was called invasion stripes (3 white lines and 2 black lines) across the fuselages and wings. This was in order to reduce accidental  friendly attacks from allied forces. We have used these ‘invasions stripes’ across the shoulders of the Jerseys to signify the airforce and the coming together of the Allied forces.

As a mark of respect each shoulder has a poppy with a black background.
